How to go from “ This morning is the worst” to “Wow that almost took me down, but I got this!”
Have you woken up today thinking “I want a start over?”
A day where you think to yourself “Why does everything bad seem to happen to me?” I know I have woken up where mornings like this could literally take me down. The morning starts off ok at first, you put on a nice outfit and get ready to leave the house, and then before you know it that cup of coffee you just made is all over that same outfit. You think, “Oh great there goes my coffee and the outfit I just bought.” You stumble your way upstairs to grab a different outfit and trip on your child’s toy they left out the night before. You tell yourself, “I need to be a better parent and have them pick up their toys!” All of a sudden the day that was starting off with a nice outfit and a positive attitude has become a morning of negative self talk. Although, it seems easier said than done, we can choose how we go about the rest of our morning. We can choose to take a deep belly breathe, shake it out of our body, turn on some good music and let ourselves sing at the top of our lungs! We shift from being completely dysregulated and wanting to scream at the top of our lungs to singling at the top of our lungs! The change in behavior calms are emotion brain and takes us out of fight or flight and moves us to calm. It is then that we can shift our thinking. We can say, “I choose to have a good day.” We put one foot in front of the other and we go about the rest of our day! Later, we choose to laugh about the Terrible, Horrible, No good, Very bad Morning we could have had.
